It is normal for pregnant women to experience morning sickness at some point in their pregnancy. Morning sickness is one of the most common symptoms of being pregnant. This is generally characterized by a feeling of nausea that is often associated with vomiting.

While many assume that morning sickness only strikes every morning, it can occur at any time of the day. Most expectant mothers find it hard to deal with morning sickness, especially when a lot needs to be done or attend to in a day.

The duration of this condition is not, however, the same with all pregnant women, for every pregnancy is different. Some expectant women are lucky enough not to experience morning sickness at all during their pregnancy.

Morning sickness may strike due to several causes:

  1. Increase in the levels of HCG and estrogen.
  2. Increase in Progesterone level resulting in stomach acid.
  3. The level of blood sugar is low.
  4. Increase in the level of sensitivity to certain tastes and odors.
As pregnant women consult their doctors regarding their pregnancy, many effective ways are prescribed and recommended by physicians as a relief to morning sickness. The following are some of the most common treatments to abate morning sickness:
  1. Simply avoid foods or odors that can easily trigger nausea and vomiting. In the case of early pregnancy, it is best if women will first observe and make a list of the things that can cause morning sickness. This way, it will be easier for them to avoid the foods and odors that trigger nausea and vomiting.
  2. Always have complete and uninterrupted rest. Working pregnant women tend to brush off opportunities to take a nap even if they are already dozing off. That is why it is recommended among expectant mothers to take leave from their work for them to have proper and complete rest at home.
  3. Skipping meals is a sin for pregnant women. Doctors strictly advise expectant mothers to eat frequently to avoid feeling nauseated. Most women have their husbands bring food to bed whenever they feel hungry anytime during the night. Also, some pregnant women prefer to eat light snacks before getting up from bed or before eating breakfast.
  4. Constant intake of liquid such as water, smoothies, and sugar-free juices is also the best way to avoid morning sickness. Tea is also a perfect alternative for water and fresh juices. These liquids help expectant mothers to ensure that they won’t be dehydrated.
  5. You can also opt for an anti-nausea wristband which exerts pressure and stimulates the P6 (or Nei-Kuan) acupressure point. It has been proven that pressure on this point relieves nausea and vomiting.
As these suggested remedies are not necessarily 100 percent effective to all pregnant women, these are surely the best treatments to help prevent morning sickness in the early stage of pregnancy. When quick remedies do not work, doctors sometimes prescribe anti-nausea medications to pregnant women. However, make sure to consult a doctor first before purchasing or taking in any type of medicine for morning sickness, for there are some medications that can give harmful effects to a woman’s pregnancy.
